If your worldview means...
  • that public policy should be based on rational enquiry and evidence
  • that human ethics, morality or principles should be based on human social nature and shared reality
  • that we can take responsibility for our actions rather than deferring responsibility to supernatural realms
  • that the world is amenable to our rational curiosity
... and if you are concerned about...
  • the rise of fundamentalism and other claims staked on dogma or intuition
  • the growing influence of religious groups in politics
  • the segregation of children in religious and sectarian schools
... then you may be a Humanist.

"We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus and non-believers"
(Ed's emphasis)
President Obama's inaugural address

"If all theories are given equal status, teachers could say: "Your essays on the cause of tornadoes were very good. Nathan's piece detailing the impact of warm moist air colliding with cool air, with original sources from the Colorado Weather Bureau, contained some splendid detail. But Samatha's piece that went "Because God is cross" was just as good so you all get a B+."
Mark Steele on Creationism

"There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life"
When comedienne Ariane Sherine saw a Christian poster campaign threatening non-Christians with hell and damnation, she made a light-hearted blog suggestion that atheists respond with message of their own in the same medium. Since that small start last June, what has become 'The Atheist Bus Campaign' has gained a startling momentum that reminds us how many non-religious people there are in the UK. Supported by Richard Dawkins, AC Grayling, Graham Lineham and Stephen Fry among others, the campaign has smashed its fund-raising target, enabling it to go nationwide.
